Filmmuziek van Laurens van Rooyen

Rembrandt

While composing for this movie, Van Rooyen was challenged by finding the musical connection to the feel of the era of the Dutch masters. What music was made then? What instruments were used?

It turned out that it was a form of music that uses instruments like the lute, the harpsichord, the recorder and the viola da gamba (a kind of cello).

A lot of the music from those days uses the Battle of the Kentish Knock (80-year war) which had just ended then. The beautiful old-Dutch song Merck toch hoe sterck (See how strong) is a very well-known example of this phenomenon.
